How to Clean Your AC!

“Clean my AC? That sounds about as fun as watching paint dry!” Trust us, it’s not as bad as it seems.

In fact, with our handy guide, you’ll be able to get your AC clean in no time!

Step 1: Safety first!

Before you start cleaning your AC, make sure you’re being safe. Start by turning off the power to your AC unit. Locate the shutoff box, which is typically situated outside near the AC unit, and flip the switch to the “off” position. This step is essential to prevent any electrical accidents or injuries while you’re working on the unit.

Additionally, make sure you have the proper tools and equipment on hand, such as gloves, a soft brush, a hose, and mild detergent. Wearing gloves will protect your hands from any sharp edges or debris while cleaning.

Step 2: Get your clean on

Now that your AC is powered down, it’s time to get cleaning. Start by removing the fan cage and giving it a good rinse with a hose. If it’s really gunked up, you might need to use a soft brush and some mild detergent to get it looking shiny and new.

Next, take a look at the fins. These are the little metal blades that surround the unit. If they’re bent or clogged with dirt and debris, use a fin comb (you can grab one at your local hardware store) to gently straighten them out.

Step 3: Don’t forget the inside!

With the exterior of your AC unit clean, it’s time to focus on the inside. Grab your vacuum cleaner and use the soft brush attachment to gently remove any dust or debris from around the evaporator coils and other interior parts. The evaporator coils are responsible for absorbing heat from the air inside your home, so it’s important to keep them clean for optimal performance.

Be cautious while cleaning the interior of your AC unit, as there are many delicate components that can be easily damaged. Avoid using any sharp objects or applying too much pressure while cleaning.

Step 4: Put it all back together

Once you’ve thoroughly cleaned both the exterior and interior of your AC unit, it’s time to reassemble everything. Start by reattaching the fan cage, making sure it’s securely in place. If you removed any screws or bolts, make sure to replace them and tighten them properly.

After reassembling your AC unit, turn the power back on at the shutoff box. Allow your AC to run for a few minutes to ensure that it’s operating properly. You should notice improved airflow and cooler air coming from your vents.
