Want to Save on Heating This Season?
Winter weather will be here before you know it, and with it will come the higher energy bills of the heating season. Since energy prices aren’t going anywhere but up, winter heating bills may take a bigger bite out of your budget this year than last. While there isn’t much to be done about utility rates, you can save on heating costs by taking a few simple steps to improve energy efficiency in your Fairfax area home, reducing energy consumption and those heating bills. Among the most important of these are:
- Have your heating system serviced – Professional maintenance of your heating system can make a substantial difference in its efficiency, and a more efficient system means you’ll save on heating costs.
- Keep your air filters clean – A dirty air filter can rob your heating system of efficiency, increasing energy consumption. Check your system’s filter every month throughout the heating season, and replace it when it looks soiled – at least every 60 days.
- Upgrade to a programmable thermostat – With a programmable thermostat, your temperature setting can be automatically adjusted lower when less heating is called for, such as when you are at work for the day or sleeping at night. This simple measure can cut heating costs by up to 30 percent.
- Seal air leaks – If your home is drafty, you’re wasting a lot of energy – and money – heating the outdoors. So get some weatherstripping and caulk to handle those leaky windows and doors, and make sure you have plenty of insulation between your living space and unheated areas, like attics, basements, crawl spaces or attached garages. Use storm windows or plastic to shore up drafty, older single-pane windows. By stopping those drafts, you can save on heating costs by as much as 20 percent.
