Take Heat Loss Seriously – Here’s How to Deal With It

Heat loss can be a significant problem in your Fairfax, VA home this winter. When heated air escapes your home’s thermal envelope, it causes your central heating equipment to work harder, decreasing its energy efficiency and increasing utility bills.

To prevent this undesirable energy transfer, consider the following heat loss reduction tips:

  • Replace air filters. It’s important to regularly replace air filters throughout the year. Clean filters that aren’t packed with debris allow the warm air from your furnace to reach your living spaces faster and more efficiently.
  • Check heating vents. Floor grates and heating vents can act as natural traps for the dust and debris that’s pushed through your home’s ductwork. To keep your heating system running effectively, be sure these areas are kept clear of any debris buildup.
  • Wrap your water heater. Simply adding an insulating blanket over your home water heater can reduce energy use by as much as 10 percent. Over the course of a long Virginia winter, this can rack up to significant energy savings.
  • Insulate any exposed piping. In addition to wrapping the water heater, it’s important to be sure all attached piping is well insulated. A good methodology is to start at the heating unit and follow the piping outward to be sure no segments are left unexposed.
  • Inspect the exterior. Holes and gaps in your home siding and foundation can act as major culprits for heat loss. Check for gaps around piping, rotten wood and deteriorating sealing compounds.
  • Inspect roofing material. Check your roof for any missing or cracked shingles or tiles and inspect from inside your attic.
  • Check window and door joints. Over time, the regular use of windows and doors will cause their joint seals to naturally loosen and lead to air leaks.
