4 Steps to Reduce Heating Costs for Your Springfield Home
When you take steps to reduce heating costs, not only do you keep more energy dollars in your pocket, you’re also making improvements that preserve your home. These four tips will cut down on the amount of time your heating system and water heater run, as well as protecting the exterior of your home by reducing air infiltration and heat loss.
Turn Down the Heat
The simplest way to lower heating costs is to keep your home cooler. You don’t have to sacrifice comfort by installing a programmable thermostat. Keeping the temperature comfortably warm when you’re home and programming it to lower the temperature when you sleep or are away will save up to three percent on heating costs for each degree you lower the temperature.
Lower Water Heater Temperature
Next to heating your home, water heating uses the most energy for the typical family. Turning it down to 120 degrees F saves energy and prolongs its life. When it’s set higher, more hard water deposits form at the bottom of the tank that increase heating costs and wear out the tank faster.
Seal the Air Leaks
A fast way to reduce heating costs is to seal all the air leaks in your home’s envelope. Windows and exterior door frames are likely places for air infiltration, as are the places where pipes, wires and cables enter your home.
Most cracks and crevices are easy to seal with caulk, and larger leaks can be filled with expanding foam. Before selecting, read the product’s instructions carefully to verify it’s safe to use around vents that exhaust heat or gases.
Heat is constantly moving toward colder temperatures and by adding more attic insulation, you can slow the rate of heat loss through the ceilings into the attic. The optimal level of insulation for attics in our region ranges from 16 to 20 inches. It’s an affordable and durable way to increase year-round energy efficiency.
