Potential Problems That Can Cause an Air Conditioner to Leak Water

Excess water leaking and pooling around your A/C unit could be a sign of trouble. If you notice excess moisture coming from the system, you should address the problem immediately to prevent costly damage to the system. If your air conditioner leaks water, here are a few tips that can help you diagnose the problem.

  • Improper installation – If your A/C unit has been installed on unlevel ground or if the pressure in the system is poorly regulated, it may leak water. Check to see if the unit is level. If it is, check for closed vents in your house and open them to relieve excess pressure.
  • Broken pump – Leaking water could be a sign of a broken pump. To find out, pour some water into the condenser pan to see if it can pump the excess out. If it can’t, check the power. If there’s power going to the unit, there’s a problem with the pump. A professional should be called to check it out.
  • Blocked drain hole – Your A/C has a built-in drain hole to remove excess water. Locate it and check the tubing for dirt and debris that may be blocking the flow. Clear it out, and if the excess leakage and pooling stops, you’ve solved the problem.
  • Air leakage – If your unit’s not properly sealed, warm air can leak in from the outside and condense on the inside, creating water that then leaks out. If you think this may be the case, consult a professional and have him fix the seals on the unit.
  • Cold temperatures – When the weather turns cold outside, the water in your A/C won’t evaporate as quickly as it normally would. If there’s just a little water, don’t worry about it. It will evaporate on its own.
