Do You Know How to Replace Batteries in a Thermostat?

Some thermostats, whether manual or programmable, typically require annual battery replacements, since they either use batteries to completely power them, or as backup power during power outages to retain their programming.

If your HVAC system suddenly stops working, the first place to start troubleshooting is the thermostat. If you see a blank screen on the device, check the batteries before calling in an HVAC professional. Some devices show a warning light that alerts you about a month or two before the batteries will fail.

However, it’s easy to forget about the thermostat, especially programmable units, since they work behind the scenes to control when the system runs and changes the temperatures in your home. They usually require little attention from you to keep your home comfortable.

How to Change Thermostat Batteries

These directions may help you replace batteries in a thermostat:

  1. Remove the cover. If it doesn’t slide off easily, try pushing it upward. You may need to consult the owner’s manual the manufacturer provided with the thermostat for complete directions.
  2. Locate the compartment for the batteries and remove the old ones. As you do so, note how they’re arranged in terms of polarity, since the thermostat won’t function if the new batteries aren’t installed exactly as the manufacturer specifies. Often the thermostat’s housing or battery compartment is stamped with the correct polarity.
  3. Replace the battery cover so that it fits snugly. The viewing screen should light up. The unit may need to be reprogrammed or reset if it doesn’t immediately display your programming.

Even though these thermostats may need battery replacements periodically, the advantages they offer outweigh having to change them. A programmable device, especially a WiFi model, saves substantial amounts of energy and provides access from anywhere you can get an internet signal.
