Important Factors to Consider When You’re in the Market for Furnace Replacement

As the seasons change, so does your family’s need for indoor comfort; prior to the onset of very cold weather is a good time to consider furnace replacement.

When you’re in the market for updating your home heating system, there are a number of factors to take into consideration prior to making your decision:

Know your terminology – Understanding the words and phrases used in home heating and cooling will enable you to make better evaluations.

Look for Energy Star certified equipment — The first step in evaluating systems is to find ones that are more efficient than your old furnace, which will result in lower energy costs, and in some cases, tax credits. The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) sets the standards for which furnaces qualify for Energy Star certification.

Furnace replacement options – You will have to determine which type of unit you desire: gas fuel, oil, or heat pump style. They each have their advantages. Most preferred installs today opt for gas, although oil fueled systems are still popular in older homes. Heat pumps draw air from the outside of the house, making them more popular in milder climates.

Having decided on a type of fuel/system, a whole range of features are present in different units. You may prefer zoned heating options, or units that offer variable fan speeds.  Units with built-in air-cleaning technology can help keep your home atmosphere cleaner, which is especially helpful for families with allergies and other health conditions.

Finally, choose your manufacturer wisely, as not all brands are equal. Carrier is one of the most preferred brands by consumers, and makes multiple models of Energy Star- certified units. Consumer surveys generally find Carrier furnaces to be quieter than other brands in the same class.

Some simple tips can help keep your old system more efficient while you are shopping for your furnace replacement.
