Ductwork Issues? Could Be Simple Signs of Aging
Ductwork issues are a sign your ducts may be too old to work efficiently, or they’re in serious need of repair. From leaky joints and corrosion to large-scale airflow obstructions, inefficiencies in your duct system can add up to major expenditures via high utility bills and increased HVAC repairs.
Here are some common signs that your ductwork issues are a sign of aging:
- Your home is more than 15 years old. Until recently, duct design emphasized cost effective strategies rather than long-term energy efficiency. If your home is more than 15 years old, consider having your ducts inspected by a professional. Investing in a redesigned duct system using accurate calculations from Manual D can pay for itself through reduced utility expenses and less wear and tear on your system.
- Higher energy bills. Does it seem like your energy bills continue to creep upward even though your HVAC usage is about the same? This can be a sign of airflow obstructions or duct issues, requiring your HVAC system to work harder to maintain your desired thermostat settings. If your HVAC equipment has been well-maintained and recently tuned-up, your ducts are the next place to look.
- Inconsistent airflow. Is the airflow inconsistent from room to room? Do you notice temperature fluctuations in different areas of the house? An aging duct system might be the culprit. You may have leaks, physical obstructions or detached sections of ductwork that prevent the conditioned air from reaching your living space.
- Noticeable corrosion or repair issues. If you’re able to, take a peek into your crawl spaces, basement and the attic and examine the physical duct materials. You may see signs of rust or visible corrosion. A common sign of duct leaks will be tracks of dust that emanate from the duct joints. There’s a chance entire sections of ductwork have completely separated, which drastically affects airflow and whole-house comfort. Any of these signs should be dealt with immediately to improve your system’s efficiency.
