Do You Have a Long-Term Energy Savings Strategy?
Sometimes all it takes is one eye-bulging utility bill to fuel your determination to devise a long-term energy savings strategy.
So where should you begin? Survey the bigger picture, beginning with how you use energy in the first place. If you’re like most homeowners, nearly half of your utility bill is for heating and cooling. Water heating, appliance usage and lighting each comprise about 15 percent of your bill. Electronics and other contributors make up the remainder.
Knowing this, direct your energy savings strategy to the bigger sources of energy consumption first. This is what separates a short-term energy savings strategy from a long-term one, as well as your commitment to being vigilant to it. So harness your heating and cooling expenses by:
- Checking for holes and leaks and sealing the ductwork that weaves through your attic, crawlspace, basement and garage. The warm and cool air you’re paying for can escape through ducts that are in disrepair. This is a job you can do yourself with mastic or foil tape. Seal the seams and connections, too, and then wrap the ducts in insulation for a grand start on executing your energy saving strategy.
- Installing a programmable thermostat so that you can set your thermostat around the schedules of your family, allowing you to save money when nobody is home and, to a lesser extent, overnight.
- Scheduling an annual maintenance check for your furnace and air conditioner. This tune-up check restores greater efficiency to your HVAC system and has a knack for bringing minor problems to light before they develop in bigger, more expensive ones.
- Checking the air filter on your furnace and air conditioner every month during their respective “busy” season. You may have to replace the filter only once every three months, but at least you won’t have to worry about a clogged filter causing your furnace or air conditioner to work harder than it needs to–or shutting down.
