Don’t Let a Clogged Drain Ruin Your Fun! Read these Important Tips for Good Drain Habits on the 4th of July!
Fun, festivities and fireworks! What’s not to love about this up and coming Fourth of July weekend? Enjoying time with friends and family is always a joy, but a bunch of people all gathered into your home carries its downsides, and oddly enough a drain clog is potentially one of them! Plumbers around the US repeatedly state holiday seasons as their peak busiest times of the year. Why? Well, there are a few common causes for these drain clog epidemics, but there are also some simple solutions.
An oddball scenario to find fireworks in your drainpipes? Not with kids! We love and adore our little rascals, but they love mischief. Keep an easily accessed disposal method for those sparklers and bottle rockets, so your youngsters have a designated space to place their used up novelties. A few large pails filled with sand are a great option, as they are environmentally friendly, safe and cheap.
Food and Grease
The number one culprit of those holiday drain clogs has to be food. Your disposal gets abused on the Fourth, and sometimes the poor bugger just can’t keep up! A good workaround is to set up a few garbage cans around the party site designated specifically for biodegradable waste. The following day, you can simply drop these off in the appropriate city waste management facilities for a simple one-step clean up. Of maybe this is a good excuse to look into a compost heap of your very own.
Grease is a particularly nasty culprit, as few people really stop to think about all of that ‘harmless’ goop they run down the drain. Remember, it may be clear and free-running when it’s hot, but that grease will cool fast, coagulating into that block of lard we remember from Grandma’s kitchen. Good for green beans, sure, but terror on your drains. Even if you flush it with hot water, some of that grime is going to stick, and over time that grime will build into great big gobs of gooey clogged mess.
So, how do you get rid of it? Let the grease cool and coagulate, then wipe it off into trash that will be making its way away from your home soon. For larger amounts, once it cools you can safely store grease in an old coffee tin until it’s time for your garbage to be taken off.
Be Prepared for Unexpected Drain Clogs!
It all boils down to preparedness. If you’re looking at a large party, have adequate disposal facilities, including places to put fireworks, food, plastic and junk. If everything has a designated space, it’s much less likely to end up in your plumbing to cause a drain clog!
In a pinch, you can always try to use your plunger to clear up sink clogs. Partially fill the sink with water, then pump the plunger up and down several times before quickly pulling it off the drain opening. If that doesn’t work, and you’re not confident in taking your drain and pipes apart, call us for repairs. We have emergency services, so you party will be back on in no time!
