A/C Maintenance at Season’s End Can Mean a Lot When Next Summer Rolls Around
Your air conditioner has been working hard all summer to keep your home cool and comfortable for your family. Now that the weather is cooling off, there are a few steps you should take to help your system recover from the summer months. Follow these A/C maintenance tips so your unit is ready to go next summer.
- Change the filter – Changing the A/C filter once a month is a good habit to maintain. This is one of the easiest ways to keep the unit running efficiently. A dirty filter can impede the flow of air, making the unit work harder and waste energy. A clean filter also helps ensure that your family is breathing clean, healthy air.
- Clean the unit – When you’re sure that you won’t have to use your air conditioner again for a while, it is good to turn off the power at the circuit breaker and give the outside unit a good rinse with the water hose. Dirt and debris can collect on the unit and impede the crucial transfer of heat that helps the A/C do what it does. Let it sit and dry for a couple of days before you turn the power back on.
- Schedule a tune-up – Just like your car, your air conditioner can run for years with little trouble if it is kept tuned up by a professional. Schedule an HVAC professional to come out for a checkup at least once a year and your system will stay working good as new for years to come.
- Protect your unit from winter weather – Winter can bring snow and other harsh weather conditions. It is a good practice to cover up the top of your unit with a piece of plywood or similar material to keep it from taking a beating. Don’t cover the unit completely, however, as this can trap moisture and invite rust and corrosion.
