Why Would a Furnace Leak Water?
You’re probably pretty familiar with the fact that heating systems (and cooling systems, as well) naturally dehumidify your home as part of their natural process. So when water starts dripping out of the machinery, it can be a little confusing. Well, therein lies one of our answers!
Problems with the internal drain system
When your heating system removes moisture, it has to go somewhere, right? There is a system in your furnace dedicated to the removal of collected moisture, called the condensate drain. This can become clogged, or dirty, which causes a backup of moisture that will inevitably end up on the ground (or your floors!).
A few other small problems can create an excess of moisture, including the wrong flue size, if your heating system uses one, or issues with a built in or whole house humidifier.
Any Other Causes?
Yes! The last one is why a leaky furnace is becoming a more common occurrence, actually.
High Efficiency Furnaces
In the quest for better heating and cooling costs, ‘green’ heat and environmental consciousness, high-efficiency furnaces have nearly become the standard. But, they come with a few newer issues, including the potential for leaks.
High-efficiency furnaces use two heat exchangers, rather than the “standard” one. This allows for better heating by utilizing fuel more effectively. As heat travels from one exchanger to the other, the warmed air has a short chance to cool, creating condensation. Normally this is filtered out and drained through an internal system, but without proper furnace maintenance problems can crop up and leave all of that water dumped on your floors.
The Importance of Furnace Maintenance
In the world of heating, cooling and plumbing, nothing is more important than prevention! Problems are always bound to crop up, but being adequately prepared can mean the difference between repair, replacement and happy productivity. To ensure you don’t experience a leaky furnace, take advantage of professional furnace maintenance!
