Holiday Tips to Preserving Energy
The holiday season on average sees an increase of about nine percent in energy bills. That’s actually quite a lot. Think about it; people are having family over and using extra lights, extra televisions, and more heating and air conditioning.
If you want to try to tame those energy bills, but you still want to entertain, cook, relax and have fun, here are a few alternative options available to you that will save you money on heating.
You might not know this, but LED lights can actually save you more on your bill than those other lights. Here is a good example: If you run incandescent lights (a string) for 12 hours a day, 40 days straight, it would cost you somewhere around $12. But, LED lights used in the same fashion, for the same amount of hours and the same amount of days equals out to only be about a quarter.
Get Rid of Leaks and Drafts
One of the reasons your heating might be working on overtime is because it’s literally flying out the windows and doors. First off, make sure that ALL the weatherstripping around your doors and windows is replaced – once it gets crackly and old, it stops working as well.
Second, get yourself an insulated door stopper to place on the inside of the door. This will block outdoor air.
Third, make sure that you caulk your windows – any holes and cracks as well as spaces can be “plugged” up using caulking. This is the #1 way to save money on heating. Does it take a little work? Yes. But, its worth it!
Another reason why you might be spending a lot on your heating might be because of the furnace. If a furnace is not working properly or the filter has not been changed in awhile, it might be affecting the way the heat comes out or it could be affecting the temperature of the heat. You should have someone come look at your HVAC system if you hear any rattling, bumping or howling noises, if it’s not working as well as it used to, or if you want to save money on heating.
Use Your Thermostat’s Scheduling Option
Almost all of the newer HVAC systems these days will have some sort of a scheduler on them that will help you save money on heating. These schedulers can be used to warm the house up for you when you come home from work or wake up in the morning. But, they can also be used to schedule when the heat is on or off during the day.
