Best Thermostat Settings for Spring
Spring is pretty much here now, which means you’ll probably be (somewhat reluctantly) kicking on your air conditioner to ward off the Virginia warmth. And when you do, you’ll need to set the temp. But, before you do, there are some things the experts at HVAC & Plumbing Unlimited want to clue you in on. Want to know how to keep comfort higher and utility costs lower this season? Then read on!
Why Does It Matter?
You’re probably quite aware that the higher you set your thermostat, the more energy it uses. But you might not be quite aware of just how much this really matters. You see, each and every degree you kick up your AC accounts for anywhere from six to 12 percent more energy consumed. And in terms of how your bill is going to look at the end of the month, that means every degree saved makes a very big impact, for better or for worse.
Because of this, what temperature you set your system at is a pretty important deal, and one that begs a fair amount of consideration.
As Far as the Temperature Is Concerned
We’d never want anyone to suffer through discomfort just to save a buck. We’re about comfort and quality, not hot homes and unhappy campers! So as far as a specific temperature goes, we can’t really cite a perfect setting for everyone. 72 degrees is a pretty good “general” temperature for a comfortable home that saves on energy, but it’s not for everyone. Some of us kick it to sixty eight and wish we could go lower!
And for you (and even for the 72’ers that are looking for a little extra savings), we have some additional tips and tidbits.
Efficient Thermostat Use
First up, setting a single temperature to police the entire season might not be the best way to go about things in the first place. A great way to save more than a dime is to set the thermostat much higher when you leave your home for long periods of time, like when everyone is out to work and school. Setting the thermostat up by a few degrees can pay back big here. Also using fans at night, or similar actions can help you drop a degree here and there.
But we also know that keeping up with all of that can be a pain, and easy to forget. Which is why we heartily recommend programmable thermostats! These smarthome gadgets are one of the best, most efficient ways to maximize your comfort and reduce costs, offering programmable settings, Wi-Fi remote capability so you can control your thermostat while away from the home, as well as reports and alerts. They are hands-down one of the best investments you can make!
More Temperature Tidbits
There are some small ways to help keep costs down and the cool up, too, including:
- Using ceiling fans. Ceiling fans change the perceptible temperature of a room considerably, and with new ceiling fans you can expect to comfortably drop your thermostat by a full degree or two.
- Blocking the sun. Covering your windows with blackouts or even just good window treatments stops radiant heat transfer, keeping the sun’s invasive heat out of your home.
- Scheduling HVAC maintenance. A strong, sturdy HVAC system provides more cooling, at far less cost, guaranteed.
