Tips to Avoid a Drain Clog
Don’t worry, these are all really simple! Follow these tips to ensure you’re not dealing with a drain clog or other plumbing issue in your Virginia home:
Be Kind to your Garbage Disposal
Disposals are excellent appliances that help mitigate kitchen mess. But be careful about overusing or overloading.
- Take it slow. Feed small amounts at a time, ensuring everything is mulched and gone before you do the next set. They may be able to chew up plenty, but all at once can clog a drain in no time, or bind the mechanism.
- Know what is safe. Large hunks of meat or fatty material, fibrous foods like celery, and grease should never go in a disposal. They have a very high likelihood of clogging or binding your disposal, which is a really quick way to end up with a drain clog or busted appliance.
Properly Dispose of Grease and Oil
Whether it’s the toilet, the kitchen sink, or the disposal, avoid dumping grease and oil into your drains. This is a surefire way to get a drain clog; if not immediately, in the near future. Store used grease and oil in a heat-resistant container (Old coffee tins work perfectly) and dispose of it along with the trash.
Be Sure to Avoid “Taboo” Toilet Items
In the rush of business that can be a holiday home, it can be easy to ignore the basics of toilet etiquette. Or possibly, your guests may not be quite so plumbing savvy as yourself! Be sure no one disposes of unsafe items in the toilet such as:
- Cotton swabs
- Cigarette butts
- Tampons or other feminine products.
- Floss or disposable picks
Any one of these in a toilet is a surefire clog. Keep it to the trash cans!
